IACL-32 cordially invites abstracts for oral presentations of original, unpublished research work in all subfields of linguistics on any variety of the Chinese languages or other languages of China.

Each talk will be 15 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion (25 minutes in total). Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author.

  • Length: One page maximum (including examples and references)
  • Paper size: Letter size with 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins
  • English: Times New Roman, 12pt
  • Chinese: Songti (宋体), Small 4 (小四号)
  • Format: Submit both PDF and DOC/DOCX versions
  • Anonymous: No author information in abstract file

IACL Awards

Young Scholar Award (YSA)

The YSA competition is an innovative attempt by the IACL to promote, recognize, and encourage scholarship by young scholars. It is held once a year in conjunction with the IACL annual conference.

A maximum of 5 finalists (normally 2-4) will be selected, each awarded a travel subsidy plus accommodation and invited to the IACL conference to give an oral presentation at a special session. The author of the best paper will be honored at the banquet and presented with an award certificate.

Eligibility

  • Must be 35 years of age or younger by June 12, 2026
  • Academic rank must be below associate professor (US/China) or senior lecturer (UK)
  • Previous YSA award winners are not eligible to re-enter
  • Previous finalists who did not win may re-enter if eligible

Submission Requirements

  • Full paper: Maximum 25 pages (letter size), single-authored, anonymous
  • Abstract: Maximum 1 page (letter size), anonymous
  • Must be original, unpublished, and not presented at major conferences
  • Email subject: "YSA"
  • Include: paper title, subcategory, author name, age (as of June 12, 2026), affiliation, academic rank, email

This award is an annual prize in the amount of US $500, donated by Professor Anne Yue in memory of the eminent linguist and sinologist, Professor Mantaro J. Hashimoto.

It is offered as an encouragement to young scholars who wish to devote themselves to the study of Chinese historical phonology, a field in which Professor Hashimoto was especially interested and to which he made numerous important contributions.

This award is an annual prize in the amount of US $500, established in honor of Professor Hsin-I Hsieh for his immense contributions to the IACL and to the field of Chinese linguistics.

The award is offered as encouragement to young scholars who wish to devote themselves to interdisciplinary studies in Chinese linguistics.

What qualifies as interdisciplinary?

  • Interface studies (phonology-syntax, morph-syntax, syntax-semantics, etc.)
  • Studies combining diachronic and synchronic approaches
  • Methodologies from different frameworks (formal, functional, typological, etc.)
  • Linguistics combined with other disciplines (literature, anthropology, sociology, psychology, computer science, etc.)

Content Requirements

  • Minor revisions to the original title and content are allowed; do not completely change the topic.
  • Reviewer comments may be considered for appropriate revisions.
  • List all co-authors' names, affiliations, and emails under the abstract title.
  • To adjust author order or remove co-authors, edit the document and note changes in your submission email.
  • Adding new authors is not allowed.

  • Length: 1 A4 page, single spacing, 1-inch margins (2.54 cm)
  • English: 12pt Times New Roman
  • Chinese: Songti (宋体), Small 4 (小四号)
  • Format: Submit both Word (.doc/.docx) and PDF versions
